Blueberry Time!

July, the month that our in-laws go to Canada to pick wild blueberries.  We stay home to watch the farm, which includes caring for the chickens, cows, dog, potted plants, garden, take in the mail, etc. But we don't mind. It is our "campfire out" we call it. I posted about that a few days ago.

A day ago, while I helped my mother-in-law clean and package the great amount of blueberries so that they could be frozen, we compared domestic grown blueberries to the wild ones they returned with.  The wild ones were much sweeter and tastier. There is no comparison. Not a big surprise.

We make pies, cobblers, salads and toss a handful into smoothies. But really we all should have at least a handful a day for the high fiber, vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants that may help protect our brain and skin.    Read more

Most wild blueberries are found in bogs and you literally have to bend over or crouch down to pick them. Darrell found these while we were vacationing north of Duluth, Minnesota on a bush growing pretty much in the little soil that was on the rocky mountain... high-bush blueberries. Not tame or domesticated, these were wild. And they are not any other type of berry either. They were definitely blueberries

To have some in the yard like this would be wonderful!  So I purchased 4 high-bush blueberry plants for his birthday this year and we really hope that they are the same type of berry and have that wild taste. Time will tell!
